What Shiatsu Is

Shiatsu is a Japanese bodywork tradition with multiple schools and lineages. Many contemporary forms use sustained pressure from thumbs, fingers, palms, or elbows, often through clothing and sometimes on a mat.

The approach is adapted to the person and context rather than applied as a fixed formula.

Receiving this approach.

How it may be used

Pressure is applied in a measured sequence and may be combined with gentle movement or stretching. Practice varies by training and should be represented with respect for its cultural roots.

Wild Hart presents this information for education. This method is not currently listed as an offered technique.

What to expect

The work may feel steady, rhythmic, and specific. Pressure should remain within the client’s comfortable range.

The work can be paused, changed, or stopped at any time.

Who it may support

People may seek shiatsu for its rhythm, clothed format, or focused pressure. Traditional theories may be meaningful within their systems, but medical outcomes should not be claimed as established facts.

Responses vary. This information is educational and does not replace medical assessment or care.

Safety & When to Pause

General massage precautions apply, including acute injury, infection, fever, clotting risk, fragile tissue, unhealed wounds, and recent surgery. Strong pressure or stretching requires extra care with osteoporosis, joint instability, pregnancy, and impaired sensation.

When symptoms are new, severe, unexplained, or changing quickly, medical evaluation comes before massage.
